If I asked you in what year the iPhone was first released, you would most likely choose a date many years ago. However, the iPhone was only launched in 2007. Whilst the iPhone was launched in 2007, it still took some time until the app store was released. Therefore in 2007, the job of iPhone application developer, did not exist-nor did the idea of there being such a thing as an iPhone application development company.
Nowadays you can find iPhone application development companies in the UK, the USA and a whole proliferation developers in India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Apple recently announced (although not officially) that the number of applications available for download on the app store, had surpassed half a million. Could you imagine if these were physical applications and you could buy them from a store-you’d be very lucky to find a store big enough to host half a million applications.
Games are often the most successful form of application that are developed, and I’m sure you can guess what the most successful application is which has been developed-which involves flicking a particular animal from a catapult. Although most people perceive applications to be cheap, only 27% of all applications cost $.99.

The above shows just the amazing success of Apple in allowing iPhone application developers to submit their work to the store. Naturally, Apple’s biggest competitor in the application states the Google, who have a roundabout 60% of the number of applications available, was only achieving a third of the number of downloads at Apple.
In total there are 85,569 different developers on the iTunes Store. Therefore it is very important for any budding iPhone application developer, to stand out from the competition. The success of an application, is often very hard to predict-however it is fair to say that if you have an addictive game, with a lot of buzz about it, or more likely to be successful then if you create a very very hard game.
Reaching the top 10 list of iTunes applications, should ensure a significant return on investment for an application developer. in comparison to Angry Birds, there are a significant number of unsuccessful applications that have been developed. Unfortunately, most applications are not destined for greatness and you will see there are a vast number of apps which have been downloaded only a few times, and have no ratings on the store.

Determining whether an application is a success or failure is virtually impossible. I doubt anyone would have placed money on angry birds becoming so successful, nor would any iPhone application developer believe that their application will not be downloaded by more than a few people. Taking into account the cost of iPhone application development in the UK, it’s very important that if you develop a very, very expensive iPhone application, you better have either deep pockets, or a very good idea.
